His passenger, a female in her late teens, did not require immediate hospital treatment.

The driver of the second vehicle, a woman aged in her 70s, was also taken to hospital for assessment.

The scene was preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardaí are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant camera footage, including dash cam, from the area at that time to come forward.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Milford Garda Station on (074) 915 3060, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

Meanwhile, in the southwest of the county, a woman in her 50s has died after getting into difficulty while swimming off the coast of Glencolmcille.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident just after 7pm on Friday night after the woman was taken from the water.

She was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital where she was subsequently pronounced dead.

Gardaí said a post-mortem examination is due to take place and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

The woman’s name had not been confirmed by the time of going to press.

This incident marked the second drowning tragedy to hit the county within a week.

On Saturday, July 26, well-known musician Jock McDonald (69) passed away in hospital after he got into difficulty swimming in Bundoran.

Mr McDonald, who was the founder of a popular punk rock band, ‘The Bollock Brothers’, was removed from the water by the RNLI and was taken to Sligo University Hospital in a serious condition.

He subsequently passed away in hospital.
