THE man who was being detained by Gardai as part of an investigation into alleged human trafficking and exploitation in Letterkenny has been released.
However, gardai have confirmed a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The man, in his 40’s from Easter Europe, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon as part of the first multi-agency operation of its kind in the country.
The probe involves statutory agencies such as the Gardai, HSE, Departments of Labour and Social Protection along with the Romanian Embassy and their police force.
Six homes and businesses were searched on Tuesday during a raid by up to thirty gardai while computer and mobile phones were also seized.
A multi-agency investigation discovered Romanian people were being trafficked into the country, forced to live in miserable conditions and work for insufficient food and money.
Four weeks ago three premises in Letterkenny were raided and six men, aged between 21 and 45, were taken to safe and secure accommodation.
