Man left in hospital due to issues finding a suitable place to live

A MAN in his fifties with Down Syndrome has been unable to leave hospital due to difficulties finding a suitable place for him to live.

Raising the issue with the Donegal News Gina Grant, PRO for Donegal Down Syndrome, said the individual has been on a waiting list for adult training services for over a year.

She said through circumstances beyond anyone’s control the man now needs supported accommodation which is not available in the county.

“His only option is a nursing home. The person is in hospital and at one point would have had a medical reason but now has no medical reason to be in hospital,” said Ms Grant.

“The person has been accepted into a nursing home but because of his young age and because the person is capable and needs activities and stimulation a training centre is more suitable.

“A training centre has agreed to take him on but they need funding.”

Ms Grant said they have been in contact with the HSE but has been unable to get a resolution to the problem.

“No one is taking responsibility for the funding” she said. I don’t know where to turn, meanwhile he is still in hospital.

“I have no words for what is going on. I am at level of complete frustration.”

Ms Grant said the family involved is very anxious and confused as to why their family member is left in hospital. She said if the man goes into a nursing home then he will have to use the Fair Deal scheme to access residential care while supported living would be a cheaper avenue.

“He will lose the majority of his disability allowance to pay the nursing home because the state has failed him,” she said.

The Donegal News contacted the HSE for a response but none was received at the time of going to press.
