A MAN pleaded guilty at Wednesday’s sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court to causing the unlawful termination of a pregnancy.
The accused faced a charge of prescribing and administering or procuring any drug, substance or instrument knowing or intending it to be used or employed to end the life of a foetus or being reckless as to whether it was intended to be used or employed in accordance with the Health Regulations of Terminations of Pregnancy Act 2018.
In addition the man had been charged with assault causing harm to the woman and separate charges of false imprisonment and making threats to kill.
A jury had been empanelled in the case which would, the court heard, have taken six days. But the accused changed his plea to one of guilty on the day of the scheduled trial.
The charge of making threats to kill and false imprisonment were taken into consideration.
Prosecuting counsel, Paul Greene, S.C., told the court the pleas were accepted on a full facts basis.
A victim impact statement had been prepared, he indicated.
The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was remanded in custody by Judge John Aylmer to the February sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.
