A MAN who was detected speeding outside Magherabeg National School told Letterkenny District Court he was unaware of the variable speed limit.
Martin Murray, 2 Castleview Court, Swords, Dublin, was before Letterkenny District Court on Monday this week after failing to pay an FCN for speeding.
Murray was detected by a Go Safe Van operator driving at 80kph at Magherabeg National School on November 27, 2023 at 8.31am during a variable speed limit of 60kph. An FCN was issued but was not paid.
The stretch of road outside the Manorcunningham school was once dubbed the “most dangerous in Ireland” due to the lack of car parking and also the upper end speed limit of the road at 100kph.
Following a campaign by staff and parents, the speed limit outside the school was reduced a number of years ago from 100kph to 60kph during school at drop-off points in the morning and afternoon pick-up times.
The defendant told the court that he is on that road twice a week, and understood the speed limit to be 80kph.
Judge Éiteáin Cunningham told Murray that the speed limit is reduced to 60kph at certain times for drop off and pick up times at the school. Murray was fined €350, and was given six months to pay the fine.
