A DONEGAL man appeared before Letterkenny District Court this week having been extradited from the North on a number of sex assault/rape charges.
Detective Garda Robin Doyle told the court the accused, who is aged in his 60s, was arrested at Lifford Bridge at 11.05am on Monday morning.
The accused had served a prison sentence in the North before being extradited to Donegal on a European Arrest Warrant.
A reporting restriction set down by the court means the man cannot be named at this time.
Detective Doyle told the court that there are nine outstanding arrest warrants for the man.
The man was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station where he was cautioned and given a copy of each charge sheet for the various alleged offences.
He is charged with a number of sexual assault/rape charges, which allegedly took place at locations in Donegal between 1990 and 2000.
The court was told that when the accused was cautioned, he gave a number of replies including: “I wasn’t down there then”, “I wasn’t there”,
“I wasn’t there in ’93”, “wasn’t down there in ’93.”
Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had directed trial at the Circuit Criminal Court. He said the Book of Evidence would “take some time to prepare”.
Solicitor representing the accused, Mr Donough Cleary, told the court he was not making a bail application.
He said he will provide gardaí with details of an address that the accused man is welcome to go to.
Judge Eiteain Cunningham asked if Gardai could be given notice of this with the bail application.
She adjourned the case until tomorrow when the accused will appear via videolink.
Mr Cleary was granted legal aid.
