Man arrested in Glenswilly shooting incident

GARDAI in Milford today arrested a man in his 40s in relation to the shooting incident in Glenswilly on Saturday morning in which a man sustained injuries and had to be transferred to Galway University Hospital.

The arrested man is currently being detained at Milford Garda station under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939.

42-year-old Mr Gerard Sweeney, a native of Glendowan, sustained injuries to his face and shoulder following the shooting incident at Ballinakillew.

Mr Sweeney, was taken to the plastic surgery unit at Galway’s University Hospital for treatment to pellet wounds in his face.

The scene of the shooting about a mile from Templedouglas Graveyard was examined by forensic officers on Saturday afternoon.

The incident is reported to have happened as a result of a row over a right of way land dispute.
A firearm was reported to have been discharged twice during the dispute. One of the cab windows in a digger was shattered by the gunshots.

Mr Sweeney, was in the cab at the time, according to local reports.
He was rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital and subsequently brought to Galway University Hospital for further treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening.
