A man has appeared before Letterkenny District Court this morning charged with assault with harm on Shanan Reid McDaid.
The young student (20) sustained bruising to her face, a broken nose, a black eye and chipped teeth in the horrific attack at Market Square in Letterkenny in October 2017.
The Arts student had been home for the weekend from Galway and had been enjoying a night out with her boyfriend and friends. She had left them temporarily to use a bathroom and upon making her way back to them she was attacked.
A garda told the court the man was arrested at 9.38am this morning from a address in Letterkenny. The court heard the man made no reply to the charge.
Sergeant Jim Collins asked the media to refrain from reporting the individual’s name due to safety fears.
Sergeant Collins said there was consent to bail with a number of conditions. These include that he surrender his passport (which he has done), and does not apply for another, that he sign on at Letterkenny Garda Station three times a week and that he is contactable by gardaí at all times. He is to have no contact with any witnesses.
Defendant’s solicitor, Frank Dorrian asked if his client could sign on twice a week instead, to which the court agreed.
Sergeant Collins said: “We have DPP direction on this matter to proceed on indictment.”
The man was remanded on bail on his own bond of €150 to appear before Letterkenny District Court again on November 4 when the Book of Evidence will be served.
