A DERRYMAN who allegedly head-butted a Garda and spat blood in his face in addition to other charges including punching a woman in the face, has been remanded in custody at Castlerea Prison.
The defendant’s solicitor, Rory O’Brien, complained of the delay in having the Book of Evidence served on his client when the case came up at Letterkenny District Court this week.
Rodney Bonnes, of 130 Kinsale Park, Derry, faces a number of charges including that he allegedly head-butted Garda Kenneth Merritt and spat blood in his face at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel on June 12, 2024.
He is also charged with soiling a bed and bedding with urine and blood at the same hotel on the same date, and with smashing a bed side lamp and with soiling another lamp.
In addition, he is charged with assaulting Moya Kearney at the hotel and obstructing Garda Kieran Kelly at Buncrana Garda Station.
Further charges include threatening and abusive behaviour at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel, intoxication in a public place, and with resisting Garda Merritt.
Garda Sergeant Gerard Dalton told the court that the Book of Evidence was not yet ready to be served in the matter.
Mr O’Brien asked when it was likely to be ready, pointing out that his client had been in custody since being arrested on June 12 last.
“We are far past where we are meant to be. We need some clarification on this,” the solicitor insisted.
Judge Eiteain Cunningham said they would hope for progress in the case which she adjourned to Monday, September 16, when the defendant will appear by video link.
