MAKING A SPLASH: Charity swim from Donegal to Dublin

This weekend sees the third annual Swim to Crumlin taking place in Finn Valley Leisure Centre, Stranorlar. The idea is to swim 215Km which is the distance from the Twin Towns to Crumlin. This is a distance a lot of families in the Finn Valley make regularly to Dublin, to get the best care available for their children. So why not swim it!!! This was the brainchild of collaboration with Niall Mulrine and Martin McDevitt (then the Pool manager)
So we broke it down to 8,600 lengths in total that makes 215KM. This gives everyone an opportunity to take part in this challenge. Children of all sizes and adults of all fitness levels.
To put this into perspective, yesterday we had two remarkable swimmers already. One lady swam the challenge with only one arm. The swimmer in the parallel lane was doing his challenge of 30 lengths and noticed how fast his ally was in the next lane. Only afterwards, did he get shocked that not only was she like a dolphin going up the lane, up she only had one arm!
A 14 year old year smashed the record of 212 lengths swam at any one time for this challenge yesterday, by completing 308 lengths.
With this record, the 12 year old girl from last year’s record is now entering today to surpass her previous record of 212 and now wanting to earn 320 lengths. Everyone is fighting for a place in a good story at this event.
Last year, there was almost 3,100 euros collected over the time of the swim and massive thanks to all the staff at the Finn Valley Leisure Centre who helped out and supported the cause, the management for arranging all the allocations and preparations. Thank you to Conor McGonagle in the Finn Valley Bistro that served refreshments for the helpers and to Gallaghers Bakery and Costcutters for donating some appetisers.
Sponsorship cards will be available at reception of FV Leisure Centre and anyone willing to help out on Saturday, please let reception know also.
