Two years in the boxing wilderness – that was the consequence for Jason Quigley following his shock loss to Tureano Johnston back in July of 2019.
It’s the kind of lay-off, discard even, that coach Andy Lee says might have forced others to walk away.
But while both Quigley and Lee seem to suggest that a reset button of sorts has since been pressed in terms of the fighter’s approach inside the ring, one thing that always remained evident in any of the Ballybofey man’s previous 19 professional bouts was that he possessed serious heart.
And it was that kind of intestinal fortitude that just about kept him treading those deep and dangerous waters, against Bahamian powerhouse Johnston, that fateful night at Fantasy Springs.
It was a punishing experience for Quigley who was eventually retired on his stool by his concerned corner, after nine hard-hitting rounds.
Enter Lee – a man that knows only too well the pain, heartbreak even, that the former amateur world silver medallist was no doubt feeling in the weeks and months that followed…
