A MAJOR rescue operation is underway to free people trapped in a shop in Creeslough following an explosion earlier this afternoon.
Two fire brigade, the army and coast guard helicopters, along with ambulance personnel and Gardai are currently at the scene at Creeslough supermarket which was destroyed in the incident.
The ambulance service has put out a call for additional staff to assist in the operation.
Roads into the village have been cordoned off and Gardai have moved the public away from the scene. Cars are being removed and the area around the shop is currently being cleared.
Buildings in the surrounding area were also impacted by the blast and windows 100 metres away were smashed.
It is not yet known if there has been any fatalities.
Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty said: “My thoughts and prayers are with all those injured in the explosion in Cresslough. Devastating news.”
