THE chairman of St Eunan’s GAA in Letterkenny has said the green light to a new playing field is a boost for the sporting fraternity and entire community.
John Haran was speaking to the Donegal News after Donegal County Council gave the go-ahead to the development in Ballymacool.Applicant Charlie McAteer on behalf of St Eunan’s GAA lodged plans with the local authority in April of last year for the development of a new playing field, with floodlight, goalposts and ball stops. A new walking track, erection of floodlighting and all associated site development works was also contained in proposals.
Mr Haran said the project has now gone out to tender with hopes to have diggers on site in two to three months.
“Planning permission has been given the go-ahead and it will be a great facility, for not only the club and other local sports clubs but the wider community. We’re always looking for new pitches. The project is out to tender now for a price and we hope to have diggers on site in two to three months. All going to plan, we hope to have the project completed in 12 to 18 months.”
Mr Haran, who is principal of St Bernadette’s Special School in Letterkenny, said the project has come to fruition due to the determined efforts of the local community.
“We applied for a €150,000 Sports Capital Grant last year. We were successful with it and it was added to our voluntary fundraising. The club had a car draw last year which was very successful.
“This project is thanks to the hard work of the community, and it will be a boost to the GAA family and the entire community. We are always so well supported by the community.”
Mr Haran said an exciting element of the project is the 1km walking route. He said walking and recreational exercise became important to so many people during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Donegal County Council has granted permission to the development, subject to six conditions.
