A MAJOR dual-venue exhibition which aims to observe the dynamics between belonging and exclusion in response to the Donegal context officially opened last weekend.
Swallowing Geography opened at the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny on Saturday, 15th October, and Glebe House & Gallery on Sunday, 16th October and presents the lived and imagined experiences of inhabiting space, while exploring our engagement with geographical, domestic and digital worlds.
The exhibition features new pieces by four Donegal artists Cara Donaghey, Laura McCafferty, Eoghan McIntyre and Jill Quigley and also includes a broad selection of artworks from the Arts Council Collection.
Popular four-piece, the West Ocean String Quartet makes a very welcome return to the RCC tonight (Thursday), 20th October (8pm).
The renowned quartet has shared stages and studios with some of the very finest – Christy Moore, Liam O’Flynn, Stephen Rea, Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, Matt Molloy, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Brian Kennedy and Eimear Quinn.
Award-winning author, playwright and Irish Times columnist Michael Harding will officially open the Seventh Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter Literary Festival at the RCC tomorrow (Friday), 21st October at 8pm. Admission is free.
On Wednesday 26th October (8pm), the godfather of alt country, Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), is joined by one of Ireland’s finest songwriters, Mark McCausland (The Lost Brothers).
For 40 years Gelb has carved his own unique path through rock, country, blues, punk, garage, lo-fi, jazz, gospel and flamenco gypsy music, singing songs filled with vivid imagery and dry observations in a warm, infectious drawl.
LOOK! FILM CLUB
Look! Film Club presents fantastic film at the RCC this month, the charming Irish-language film, Róise & Frank, on Thursday, 26th October (7.30pm).
Róise, a woman still in mourning following the death of her husband, is initially annoyed when a mysterious dog shows up at her door. But a series of eerie coincidences soon has Róise convinced that the dog is Frank, reincarnated.
Music Network presents a classical duo with a difference in Christian-Pierre La Marca (cello) and Félicien Brut (accordion) on Thursday 10th November (8pm).
La Marca and Brut share a love of innovative programming, a curiosity for a wide range of repertoires and styles, and a support of new works for their respective instruments.
Irish-Dutch singer and guitarist Patrick Stefan Groenland has joined forces with the excellent group Navá to create new songs with Irish, Persian and African folk influences as part of the Music Network RESONATE programme.
The final results can be heard when the artists take to the stage at the RCC on Saturday 12th November (8pm).
Celebrated composer, collaborator, producer and past pupil of the fabled institution, The Armagh Piper’s Club, Brian Finnegan returns with The Hunger of the Skin Band on Thursday 8th December (8pm).
