MEMBERS of the Irish Coastguard and the Army had to be called in to assist residents and businesses people in Lifford this morning.
Following heavy flooding after Storm Desmond hit on Friday and Saturday, the border town was one of the worst hit in the county.
Again, the Twin Towns of Ballybofey and Stranorlar, Castlefinn and the Finn Valley as well as Ardara, Glenties and Kilmacrennan were also badly affected. Major clean-up operations are underway in all these areas today.
Many families had to be evacuated from their homes as floodwaters rose in Castlefinn and Lifford.
In the early hours of this morning, the Irish Coastguard arrived in Lifford to rescue one stranded family from their home in the Roaghan area of the town.
Around the county, scores of events and sporting fixtures were cancelled because of the incessant rain and high winds
Met Eireann issued a ‘Status Red’ severe weather warning which was in force from 6 pm on Friday until the early hours of this morning.
Given the state of the roads, Donegal County Council also appealed to the public not to be undertake any unnecessary travel.
