DONEGAL ladies will be without a manager for their crucial league game against Dublin this Sunday at 2pm (venue to be confirmed), after Maggie Foy resigned as manager on Wednesday night.

Foy was only appointed manager of the team five weeks’ ago, but results have not been favourable in the league. Donegal currently sit in bottom position in Division 1 with no points from three games after defeats to Laois, Cock and Tyrone.

Donegal Ladies Gaelic Football Board Chairperson Michael Naughton confirmed to the Donegal News on Thursday that Foy had resigned from her role.

“The executive held a meeting last night to discuss a number of issues relating to the senior team, and at the end of the meeting, Maggie offered her resignation and the county board accepted it,” said Naughton.

“There were a number of issues that she was not happy with and she decided to step aside as a result.

“We wish her all the best in the future and I’d like to thank her on behalf of the ounty board for her efforts during her tenure,” he added.

Foy is currently PRO of the Donegal Ladies Board, and Naughton expects her to remain in that role.

“I hope that she will continue as PRO of the county board. It’s nothing personal. She didn’t think things were right, we accept that and we will now move on.”

The Ladies Board executive will take charge of the Donegal’s match against Dublin and they are likely to remain in charge until the end of the league campaign, while they search for a suitable candidate to manage the team.

“The executive will take the team for the Dublin match and probably the next two weekends as well.

“We don’t want to rush the decision and we want to make sure we have the right person in charge for the championship,” said Naughton.

Naughton previously managed Donegal to the All-Ireland Intermediate title in 2010, but he insists that he won’t be manager this weekend, and stated that all decisions would be made equally by executive members.

Donegal lost to Laois in their opening game of the league campaign, but put in a battling performance in their second fixture at home to All-Ireland Champions, Cork.

However, they failed to build on that display and went down to a comprehensive defeat to Tyrone two weeks’ ago. Donegal need a win this weekend if they are to have any realistic hope of staying in Division 1.

Dublin will be favourites to win this Sunday after they defeated Kerry in their opening game, and picked up an impressive draw with Monaghan in their second outing.
