POLISH and local people in Donegal were outraged this week by the inaccurate reporting of one Polish women’s experience living here on the dole.
Such was the anger after the Irish Independent carried a story on Wednesday claiming Polish woman ‘Magda’ (not her real name), described life on the dole in Donegal as ‘a Hawaiian massage’, the Polish ambassador to Ireland intervened.
The original article appeared in the Polish Newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza. Reporter Katarzyna Brejwo had interviewed Polish people living in different European countries about their emigrant experiences.
The Irish Independent story wrongly reported that Magda described where she lived in Donegal as a ‘s***hole’ and reported she did not get out of bed before noon.
RTE’s John Murray Show put an accurate translation of the Polish newspaper article on their website on Wednesday afternoon which told a very different story.
Speaking to John Murray yesterday from a Donegal beach Magda said the Independent story portrayed her as ‘someone living of the State as a welfare tourist’.
