IT has been more than 17 weeks since a spy camera was detected at Letterkenny General Hospital and Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn has now demanded that an independent investigation must be established.
Deputy MacLochlainn stated: “There seems to be no other way to establish the full facts. Does Hospital management not see that the use of any kind of covert device is totally illegal and therefore this must be the subject for a full Garda investigation?”
He is now seeking an urgent meeting with the Health Minister, Leo Varadkar, and is understood to have sent him copies of correspondence between management and maintenance staff at the Hospital which have failed to resolve their concerns.
“The HSE and Hospital management have a duty of care to all members of staff and it is very clear to me that this issue is being ignored. Where else would it take 17 weeks to deal with a matter as clear cut as this one? The spy camera and its recorded material is clearly a breach of workers rights in the EU: It is also a serious infringement on basic civil rights to privacy and the protection of hard-won principles in the workplace.”
The spy camera was detected in an office of the maintenance department at LGH on March 25.
Staff have confirmed that they have not received any assurances that their concerns have been referred to the Data Protection Agency.
