Mac Niallais disappointed following decider defeat

Gaoth Dobhair manager Rónán Mac Niallais was disappointed in the aftermath of his side’s county final defeat to Naomh Conaill on Sunday at O’Donnell Park.

The Magheragallon men were seven ahead at half-time but Martin Regan’s outfit battled back to force exra-time where they got over the line to clinch the cup.

“We’re hugely disappointed.

“We had the game there and won.

“We spoke all week about how Naomh Conaill wouldn’t give up.

“We were two points up and we had two or three chances to go three or four up and we missed them.

“It’s just not good enough at this level. If you get the chance to put a team away.

“We were too casual with those chances and we put them wide and we got our just rewards at the end.”

The Glenties men hit 1-3 without reply at the start of extra-time to leave themselves in a commanding position in the encounter.

Mac Niallais’ side tried to force a comeback and had a last-gasp chance to force a replay however, it wasn’t to be for them in Sunday’s showpiece.

“They got a great start in extra-time.

“In fairness to our lads they fought back well in the second half of extra-time and got it back to two after being six down.

“I’d be very proud of that.

“We even had a free at the end to equalise but it was a tough one for Ethan so I wouldn’t have any gripes with that.

“He was the one that dragged us back into it and we have no-one to blame but ourselves.”

“That was a three-year cycle and we didn’t do the business today.

“I don’t know where we go from there.

“The boys will have to re-group and build again and try and come up with something else for next year but it’s going to be very difficult.
