Students at Letterkenny Institute of Technology have made a historic launch in recent weeks with a new society – the Free Legal Advice Centre.
With around 30 classmates from the LLB and Law with Criminal Justice classes, the newly established group will also under the supervision of fully qualified legal practitioners.
LYIT are the newest society of the nationwide FLAC organisation; a human rights body seeking to promote access to justice for all. It is an important service for students to be aware that they have access to.
The LYIT FLAC society will be ran by students and supported by the college’s Student Union. LYIT is the first IT in Ireland to be granted the approval of FLAC to operate their free information clinics, which will be run by students of the faculty of Law for the benefit of students of all disciplines.
Several attempts have been made in previous years by other students to secure the license, but 2017 marks the first year to do so. The founding committee include; Brian McElhinney, President, Margaret Ridge, Secretary, Nathaniel McGrory, Treasurer and Niamh Brogan, Media Officer.
Clinics will be ran on a monthly basis in the in room 2271 in the main building of the Letterkenny campus, covering areas including Landlord and Tenant rights and Employment law.
