A six-week programme of lunchtime walks for Letterkenny University Hospital staff begins on Tuesday, March 29th.

Participants are asked to meet outside the main reception door at 1 pm each Tuesday and Thursday. The walks will be led by a trained walking leader, Maria McGill, and the progamme is being funded by Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP).

Looking ahead to the latest initiative, Karen Guthrie, DSP’s Community Sports Development Officer, said the aim is to get more people out walking during their lunch break.

“It’s a great opportunity for staff at the hospital to break up their day by getting out and taking a break from the stresses of work, and get their step count up,” she commented.

“There’s the added advantage of having Letterkenny Town Park on their doorstep and it’s a resource that we don’t always get the chance to use. But with instructor-led walks, there might be more of a chance that people will avail of the opportunity.

“The walks will cater for all levels and will be adjusted accordingly for all participants, so people will be able to filter in and be comfortable at their own level. When the walks are group-led and people know they will have company, they might find it easier to join the programme which can serve as a welcome break from the work environment, while also helping to clear the head,” Karen added.

Commenting on the programme, Paul Friel, Senior Health Promotion Officer with the HSE, said: “Walking is free, has proven to reduce stress and is a social outlet for many people. By changing the work environment to include accessible walking routes, we can help raise awareness of the many benefits of physical activity to one’s overall health and wellbeing.”
