Lucky escape as car leaves road  and enters stream

By Dionne Meehan

CONCERNS for the safety of motorists on the N14 have been reiterated after a car left the road and entered a stream in Manorcunningham.

The single-vehicle collision occurred at Carrickballydooey on Thursday morning, October 3.

A garda spokesperson said: “The collision involving a single vehicle occurred on the N14 at approximately 7am when a car left the road and entered a stream.

“There were no injuries reported.”

Voicing his concerns following the collision, Cllr Donal Coyle called on Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to reduce the danger to motorists on the N14.

“Thursday’s collision could have been an awful tragedy.

“A car went off the road at a bridge and into a stream, ending up on its roof.

“It is absolutely horrendous.

“It is time the TII did something regarding this road,” he said.

Having previously highlighted the dangers of the N14 from Carrickballydooey to Mondooey, Cllr Coyle urged TII to carry out a safety assessment on that stretch of road.

However, despite the assessment having been conducted, no results have been received.

“The TII are very slow in moving on this issue,” Cllr Coyle continued.

“It is less than 12 months since somebody was killed on that stretch of road and, in fact, over a period of time, there have been
two other fatalities on that same stretch.

“Work needs to be carried out to reduce the danger to motorists on that road,” he said.

With plans to highlight his concerns at tomorrow’s Letterkenny/Milford MD meeting, Cllr Coyle will be calling for static speed cameras to be erected on that particular stretch of road.

“Some people don’t realise that to travel along that stretch of road at 100kph, with the bends on it and the lay out of the road, they are taking their lives in their hands by doing that. That road and that particular stretch is not fit for 100kph,” he concluded.
