Bernadette Canning, Lucia’s mother, said they were excited to be attending the festival and seeing their little flower take part in the celebrations.

“She is so excited,” said Bernadette. “It was actually my sister and niece who spotted the advert in the paper first, we hadn’t heard anything about it.

“My husband put her in for it but we never thought anything of it, and they when we heard she was just over the moon.”

Seven year old Lucia will be in Killarney with five of her family members and will spend the week at the festival which runs from August 16-22.

She will accompany the San Francisco Rose, Amanda Donohue, in this year’s pageant.

Amanda is a student at University of Nevada, working towards a bachelor of science in physics. She is currently the Director of Cultural Interests for Delta Gamma, which allows her to host presentations to over 200 women, regarding respect and understanding of cultures around the world.

As well as accompanying the San Francisco Rose, Lucia will also enjoy a party for the Rose Buds, parades and a 2km fun run. A student at Killmacrennan National School, Lucia could well be a Donegal Rose in years to come.

“Who knows, she might just go on and compete when shes older,” said her mum.

“She is the youngest of all the cousins, and we are all spread apart but it would be lovely to see someone from the family entered it it. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
