Loughanure woman to walk 366 days for Donegal Cancer Flights

By Dionne Meehan

LOUGHANURE woman Bríd Winnie Sweeney is also raising much needed funds for Donegal Cancer Flights and Services by walking 366 days in 2024 which is a leap year.

Losing her brother, mother and father to cancer in the space of six years, Bríd wanted to give back to this worthy charity.

Based in Gaoth Dobhair, Donegal Cancer Flights and Services provides community support for cancer patients with flights from Donegal Airport to Dublin, as well as ground transport to appointments in Galway, Roscommon, Sligo, Derry and Letterkenny.

This charity also provides free counselling services, support and pamper days for cancer patients and their families.

Speaking to the Donegal News about why she chose to raise funds for this charity, Bríd said cancer has affected so many people, at least one in each family.

“A lot of my friends and family have to travel to Sligo, Roscommon, Galway and Dublin for treatment.

“A lot of them don’t drive, so this is such a fantastic service to have at our doorstep here in Donegal.

“They have enough to worry about with being fit to travel, sick after their chemo and being out of work because of cancer.

“This service takes that burden off these people,” she said.

However, this isn’t the first year Bríd has raised much needed funds for charity.

Previously, Bríd has raised money for Suaimhneas, a sculpture in Gaoth Dobhair, the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and for mental health.

Now on day 18 of the fundraiser, Bríd is fast approaching her target of €3,000. If you wish to donate to Bríd’s fundraiser you can do so via https://gofund.me/293938f0
