Loreto Secondary School Letterkenny hosted their annual ‘Elaine Winston Memorial Cup’ last Thursday.
It was a great day with four schools competing for the cup. These included Mulroy College Milford, Loreto Community School Milford, Rosses Community School Dungloe and Loreto Secondary School Letterkenny.
This is an important event for all in Loreto Letterkenny as we remember our much loved teacher, colleague, coach and friend. Elaine sadly passed away from breast cancer in 2012 and the Loreto Letterkenny girls wore pink ribbons in their hair to show support for breast cancer awareness.
It was an excellent display of football from talented players from all over the county. Each team played three games of 20 minutes with the top two teams reaching the final. It was a tough battle for all in what was a very hot day. At the end of the round robin games, it was Loreto Letterkenny and Loreto Milford who came out on top. The final was a local derby with the game finishing level at the end. The winners had to be decided with a 21m point shoot-out. Loreto Milford finished on top and were deserving winners after going unbeaten for the entire day. The day ended with the Winston family presenting the captain of Loreto Milford, Sarah McGinley, with ‘The Elaine Winston Memorial Cup’. Sarah McGinley was also chosen as ‘Player of the Tournament’ for her outstanding performances throughout the day. She was presented with her trophy by Daithi and Ruairi Winston.
Loreto Letterkenny would like to thank Loreto Milford, Rosses Community School and Mulroy College for travelling and participating in the tournament. Special mention to all who sponsored sandwiches and treats for the day, these include Tobin’s Service Station, Mac’s Mace Deli, Shaun Doherty Fruits and NatNoot Juice Company Letterkenny. Thanks also to our Transition Year and Second Year students for helping with the set up, photography and umpiring throughout the day. A big thank you to our referee for the day, Pat Barrett, for his patience and excellent judgement in the middle of the park. Finally, we would like to thank the Winston family for allowing us to facilitate this wonderful event.
