GLENFIN’S Katie Long is hopeful that they can come away with the cup when they face Termon in the Division 1 final on Sunday.
The Pairc Tabhoige residents have had a promising start to their 2025 campaign having only been defeated once in their ten league outings, finishing second place in the Division 1 table.
Long stated that she’s been pleased with how the team has gone about their business so far with the victories keeping morale high..
“We’ve been going well, we had a good enough league campaign. We’ve won nine of our 10 games so we’ve been happy out. Winning games motivates you and it keeps everyone going so we’ve been happy out with our performances to date.”
This year has been a contrasting one in comparison to Glenfin’s 2024 campaign after an indifferent league saw them finish in the middle of the pack in Division 1.
Long talked about how the collective group has put in a lot of hard work on the training pitch in order to improve on last season and they are reaping the rewards for it thus far.
“Last year we didn’t have a great league campaign, we finished up around the middle of the league table. It’s definitely been a lot better going this year, everyone is screwed on because we had such a bad league campaign last time out. We’ve been working hard and it’s paying off so far anyway.”
Glenfin are set to make their first appearance in the Division 1 final since 2022.
Long is delighted to be back in the top tier’s showpiece after a few years away from it and is hoping that they can have some silverware to show for their efforts come full-time at Father Tierney Park this weekend.
“We haven’t been in a league final now in a while I suppose. Any day that you’re in a final is a good day so hopefully we’ll be able to get our hands on some silverware.”
“We’re all looking forward to it. When you’re playing Termon every day is a battle, we’ve had a good few of them down through the years so we’re looking forward to it. Termon is a great, strong side so I’d say it’ll be a very competitive game and we can’t wait for it.”
The two sides met each other earlier in the campaign. This encounter inflicted the first loss on Glenfin as Termon ran out convincing 12-point winners on home soil.
This was a disappointing defeat for the Glenfin ladies however, Long discussed how the side were without several regulars that day with a number of the younger members of the panel receiving their first senior appearance also.
She’s hopeful that they can head to Ballyshannon on Sunday and right the wrongs from that day and take the Division 1 title back to Glenfin.
“We didn’t have a very good game when we played them earlier in the league. We had a good few young girls playing that day which for some of them was their first senior league games. We were missing a good few of the other players that day too. We want to rectify that now on Sunday in the final.”
