A LOCAL couple have shared their frustration at the amount of litter being left behind on the county’s beautiful beaches.
The retired couple, who regularly clean both Rathmullan and Kinnegar beaches, told the Donegal News that they are horrified by the amount of litter being discarded on the popular beaches.
On their daily clean-up they regularly find up to three soiled dog poop bags.
Last week they even found a used dog poop bag left “hanging from a tree like a Christmas decoration”.
“I fail to understand why someone would go to the bother of picking up after their dog to then leave the poop bag behind. Who
do they expect to clean up after them?
“Have they no respect for people who use the beach or the environment.”
But it isn’t just dog owners who are to blame. The couple also regularly find soiled nappies left on the scenic strand.
Another common culprit along the coast is take-away coffee cups that have been “shoved between rocks”.
They said they are in favour of the governments proposed introduction of a single-use levy on takeaway coffee cups to help tackle this problem.
In the meantime, they believe local coffee carts could incentivise a shift toward reusable coffee cups by offering a discount if you bring your own cup.
Despite their increasing frustration with lazy litterbugs, the couple said it is important to highlight the great community spirit in Rathmullan and the hard work of local groups who meet every Wednesday to clean the beach.
