A fundraiser has been launched for a rescued baby ferret that was found wandering the streets covered in animal bites, fleas and mites.
The GoFundMe was started by Aoife McDaid, who rescued the ferret after seeing her posted in a local Facebook group.
“When I caught her she had absolutely no fight left in her, she is emaciated, each of her ribs able to be felt, and has several wounds, old and new, from animal attacks, and is covered in fleas and mites,” Aoife shared.
The ferret had been spotted wandering alone, but no one claimed her or took the time to catch and help her, so Aoife stepped in to save her.
No local rescues near Letterkenny work with ferrets or cover their veterinary costs, so Aoife has taken on the responsibility of getting her urgent medical treatment.
“She will need a course of antibiotics to help with infection, and treatment for any potential parasites and other ailments she’s picked up while out trying to survive in the wild.”
“I know from assessing her first stool she passed since I’ve had her that she has eaten slugs out of desperation, she has tried everything in her power to stay alive for this long.
“Now I want to be able do everything in my power to help her live the life she has desperately clung onto despite everything that’s been thrown her way before I took her in.”
Aoife already owns another rescued ferret, and says that if donations exceed the vet bills, the remainder will go to a ferret-specific rescue to help other animals in need.
So far, €162 has been raised of the €300 goal.
