LAST Friday marked the Irish Congress of Trade Unions Workplace Day of Actions in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

The demonstration was organised by the Donegal branch of Fórsa trade union.

They used the opportunity to call on the government to end their complicity in genocide and to pass The Occupied Territories Bill.

If passed the bill would ban trade between Ireland and Israel’s illegal settlements in the West Bank, making the import of goods or services originating from these lands a criminal offence.

The bill was introduced by independent Senator Frances Black and is supported by Trócaire, as well as other leading human rights organisations, trade unions, academics and politicians.

In December 2024, Donegal County Council unanimously passed a motion calling on the government to enact the bill.

In the most recent plenary meeting, the Local Authority also passed a motion opposing the government’s exclusion of trade in services in an updated version of the bill.
