Local ramblers encouraged to enlist for Donegal Camino ’25

By Paul McElwee

AS the fifth annual Donegal Camino gets underway on Sunday, organisers are appealing for casual walkers and seasoned ramblers alike to sign up for the remaining days.

This seven-day walking festival will see participants traverse the highways and byways of Donegal, taking in stunning hills, coastal routes, and loop walks. It is the flagship fundraiser for Cancer Care West Support Centre in Letterkenny, with a target of raising €150,000 this year. Since its inception, the Camino has raised €279,295.30, supporting the charity in delivering increased counselling services and related supports for those on a cancer journey across the county.

The Camino begins at Inishowen Head (meeting at Shrove Beach) and culminates at Sliabh Liag, with stops including Lifford to Oakfield Park and Raphoe on Day 3 (Tuesday, September 2). Other routes with spaces still available include the Urris Hills Walk and Sunrise of Errigal.

Among the walkers on Day 3 will be Lifford singer Mickey Joe Harte and local musician and composer Matt McGranaghan, joining Camino regulars in support – and who knows, maybe a sing-song along the way!

Current chair of the Donegal Camino Committee, Deirdre McGlone, praised the innovative fundraising response of Camino walkers this year.

Ms McGlone said, “Donegal Camino is marking a milestone fifth year and we’re beyond proud of the growth in the brand and product which profiles the world-class walking in Donegal and fundraises for a much needed cancer support services and charity, Cancer Care West Donegal. We’re grateful to all of our registered walkers who’re busy fundraising €100 per day for each day they walk and this year we’re encouraging increased online fundraising using iDonate and we’re confident with the support we’re generating that we will reach our Nett target of €150,000.”

Camino founder Peggy Stringer added, “From humble beginnings with five friends in 2020, I’m very proud of the achievements of Donegal Camino and the support and funds raised for Cancer Care West Donegal.”
