Local pharmacies to begin vaccinating young people

From Monday, 5 July, people aged 18 – 34 can choose to get vaccinated with the single-shot Janssen from their local pharmacy.

To date 60,000 doses have been allocated to approx. 700 pharmacies, of which 7,000 doses have been used for people aged 50 or over so far. A further 70,000 doses are available to pharmacies, at short notice, if needed.

To arrange a vaccine, people aged 18-34 can contact a participating pharmacy to book an appointment. We are asking that people book in advance so pharmacies will be able to plan accordingly and reduce the risk of any wastage.

All those participating in the vaccine rollout have received dedicated training to ensure the safe and effective administration of the vaccine.

The HSE thanks the IPU and the pharmacies for their continued support to ensure we can roll out the vaccine in as safe and timely a manner as possible.

Vaccination at a Centre

Vaccination centres will begin vaccinating younger age groups from mid-July in line with the current age-based rollout plan. Vaccination centres will administer AstraZeneca and Janssen, as well as continuing to administer mRNA vaccines.

Online registration for people aged 30-34 year olds through vaccination centres will open next week, Friday, 9 July, in the same way as the older age groups have been.

People can register online at www.hse.ie for a vaccination centre clinic with a Personal Public Service (PPS) number, Eircode, a mobile phone number and an email address. Alternatively, people can call HSELive on 1800 700 700 to register on the phone.

Once successfully registered, we will send the appointment details by text message within three weeks, as we have done with previous groups. People who register will be referred to a HSE vaccination centre.

In mid-July online registration will be updated with functionality to allow younger age groups to opt in to receive a Janssen and AstraZeneca vaccine from a vaccination centre if they choose to.

People in older groups who have previously registered (for an mRNA vaccine) can, at that point, amend their record to opt in for an earlier Janssen or AstraZeneca vaccine at a vaccination centre if they wish.

Online registration will subsequently open for people aged 25-29 and 18-24 in due course.

Our aim in offering the vaccine to the population is to protect people and reduce the illness and deaths caused by this virus.

All vaccines are tested to make sure they are safe and work before they can be used. The HSE only uses a vaccine if it meets the required standards of safety and effectiveness.
