Local man to embark on Everest Base Camp trek in aid of Cancer Care West

LETTERKENNY man John Wilkie is gearing up for an ambitious adventure in May as he aims to complete Everest Base Camp in support of Cancer Care West.

Preparing for the trek John has dedicated significant time to training, including climbing Errigal Mountain, which he summited for the 75th time on Christmas Eve.

His previous mountaineering achievements include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2023, which stands at 5,895 metres above sea level.

The popular Karate instructor faced this challenge after years of neurological issues and hip problems.

Later diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, John’s climb symbolised the mountains he had overcome throughout his life, while also raising money for the Irish Guide Dogs Donegal Branch.

Now marking ten years since his diagnosis, John’s journey will begin in early May, departing from Dublin to Doha, then on to Kathmandu, before flying to Lukla Airport, the gateway to Everest Base Camp.

From there, the real adventure begins, as he navigates the challenging terrain that straddles the Nepal-Tibet border.

Motivated by his commitment to fitness and charity, John is undertaking this challenge to raise funds for Cancer Care West, an organisation dedicated to supporting those affected by cancer.

His 2026 motto, ‘keep fit, keep her lit’, reflects his drive to stay in top form while making a positive impact on the community.
