Local GP awarded prestigious National Prize

Dr Rory Stewart speaking at the Sheppard Memorial Prize giving in The Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club.

Dr Rory Stewart, a GP working in Dunfanaghy and Creeslough was awarded the prestigious Sheppard Memorial Prize at an award ceremony held in The Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club last Friday night. The prize is awarded annually by the Royal College of General Practitioners for work relating to general practice.
Dr Stewart was given the award for his work advocating for better rural services for Donegal, particularly in the provision of better access to Urology services which until now has lead to many local people having to travel as far as Galway to receive their care.

“The research which we carried out as a GP group, which was recently published in the Irish Medical Journal is just one of many examples which indicates that the urban-rural devide is becoming more and more apparent. The centric view of our policy makers needs to be addressed or the health of our patients will be further comprimised and rural communities, like those in Donegal will face further difficulties when trying to access services.”
