Local elections: 91 candidates to fight for 37 council seats

THE current Donegal County Council members held their last Plenary meeting on Monday in Lifford, as some 91 candidates have now registered to stand in the June 7 Local Elections in the hope of securing one of the 37 seats.

The breakdown of the number of candidates standing in each Municipal District are as follows: Letterkenny 18; Milford 9; Buncrana 12; Carndonagh 9; Lifford-Stranorlar 12; Glenties 16; Donegal Town 15.

There is a total of 19 female candidates seeking office in the election. Where there were once four female councillors in the outgoing council, Cllr Niamh Kennedy is the only one standing again.

Sadly Cllr Noreen McGarvey passed away last December, Cllr Marie Therese Gallagher has stepped down and Cllr Rena Donaghey has decided not to run again.

The traditional parties, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Labour, Sinn Féin and Greens will battle with a host of Independent candidates and those from new or newer parties such as Aontú.

The six 100% Redress candidates are the flag bearers for the thousands in the county struggling with homes built from defective concrete seeking 100% redress as the name is.

The more recently formed Irish People Party, according to their website is a collective of independent candidates who share common principals.

The number of candidates running for Fianna Fáil is 15; Fine Gael 9; Labour 3; Sinn Féin 18; Green Party 3; Aontú 6; 100% Redress 6; Independents 27; The Irish People 4.

Many candidates have taken to Facebook and Tik Tok to get their message out there with many actively canvassing, particularly in the more built up areas.
