YESTERDAY marked one year since Lifford man Charles Dooher was left clinging to life after a brutal attack in his home.
Mr Dooher (27) sustained catastrophic injuries after he was attacked by five heavily armed and masked men on January 20, 2025.
Speaking out for the first time yesterday, one year on from his brutal attack, Mr Dooher has thanked those who helped save his life after he was left in a coma.
“One year ago today, if the organisers got their way, I wouldn’t be here,” he said.
“My surgeon said it’s one of the worst injuries he’s ever seen from America to Ireland.
“Five “men” along with a so called “woman” and others organised and tried to end my life leaving me with a caved skull and in a coma.
“Only for god himself, air ambulance, surgeons, family, loved ones and all of you that prayed for me, I’ll never be able to thank you properly.
“I am walking proof of grace, learning to walk and talk again along with many other things.
“God help the people that did this, they will all have to face god himself someday.”
In the wake of the brutal attack, Mr Dooher was airlifted to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, where he spent much of the first half of last year fighting for his life.
In a desperate appeal for information shortly after the incident, Mr Dooher’s partner, Charlotte Gallen, spoke publicly about the attack.
She said five masked men armed with steel bars entered Mr Dooher’s bedroom and beat him on the back of the head, causing his skull to shatter and his brain to swell and bleed.
A cross-border investigation into the vicious assault was launched and later upgraded to a murder investigation due to the severity of Mr Dooher’s injuries.
In April last year, the Lifford man underwent a major surgical operation involving the placement of a protective plate in his head.
Following the successful procedure, he has continued to defy the odds and make a remarkable recovery.
Meanwhile, a number of arrests have been made in connection with the incident, the most recent occurring last December.
Anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 074 9167100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
