THE Lifford Greyhound Stadium has been put on the market. The 23 acre stadium site is listed for sale with O’Connor Kennedy Turtle estate agents.

The stadium employed several dozen people on a full and part time basis including restaurant staff, bar staff, tote betting operators, ground staff, kennel staff, cleaners and a racing manager.

The track was bought by the Duffy family from Derry in April 2001 and they undertook a multi-million redevelopment of the site including the modern stadium and a new track.

It became one most popular greyhound racing stadiums in the country, particularly on a Sunday evening, but in recent years crowds had dwindled and left the owners with no option but to put it up for sale.

The closure of the greyhound stadium, which has been opened since 1949, would be a massive loss to the greyhound industry in the Northwest and another blow to the border town of Lifford.
