THE family of a young Donegal woman killed by her partner six years ago have spoken of their ‘lifetime sentence’ as her killer is set for release in four years’ time.
Mum-of-two Jasmine McMonagle (27) was found strangled and beaten to death in her home in Killygordon in January 2019.
Her partner, Richard Burke (32) was jailed for 14 years in May 2023 after being found guilty of the young woman’s manslaughter.
Burke had pleaded not guilty to the murder of Ms McMonagle at Forest Park, Killygordon, on January 4, 2019 but guilty to manslaughter.
The body of the young mum was found in the kitchen of her home following a three hour standoff between Burke and gardaí.
In a statement released this week by the family of Jasmine McMonagle, they said the release of Burke is a “sickening insult to Jasmine”.
Posting on ‘Smile for Jasmine’ Facebook page, set up by family and friends in the wake of the popular woman’s killing, they wrote: “A lifetime sentence for the family for what Richard Burke did. Jasmine’s life stole.
“Set for release in July 2029. Four years from now. A sickening insult to Jasmine and a disgusting reflection on the legal system.
“Free to roam the streets again after 10 short years.
“Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
