Letterkenny’s International Grandmaster Hugh Devlin won the British & Irish ‘freestyle’ Draughts Championships at the weekend.
Devlin won the event in Naas ahead of defending Champion Shane Mc Cosker (Sion Mills) in a very competitive international field of players’ from Ireland, Scotland, and England.
Sean Mc Cauley (Moville) won the Kildare Open Tournament title at the same venue, while Noel Devlin (Burnfoot) won the Intermediate title. It was a clean sweep for the Donegal players.
Hugh’s latest win comes on the back of his return to competitive play last August 2022 after a ten-year layoff where he won the “International Robert Stewart Memorial Tournament” in Scotland.
Hugh has been invited to participate in the World Championship Qualification tournament being held in Antalya, Turkey, in early May 2023.
