THIS Christmas marks 20 years since kind-hearted Letterkenny woman Kathy O’Connor began her mission to combat isolation amongst those living alone during the festive season.
Over the past two decades, Kathy and her many volunteers have brought hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals together on the most wonderful day of the year to share a heart-warming Christmas dinner.
Meeting annually in Conwal Parish Hall, the cherished tradition reached new heights
last year, providing 200 free meals to individuals who would have otherwise spent the day alone.
Kathy, who created the special event almost by accident following the overwhelming response to a local radio appeal, said that despite low attendance in the early years, numbers have continued to grow every year.
Now celebrating their 20th anniversary this Christmas, she is hoping for their busiest year yet.

Last year, 200 free meals were provoided to individuals who would have otherwise spent the day alone.
“We are excited to say that this is our 20th year providing dinners for people on their own throughout Donegal on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day,” she said.
“We work alongside the Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and people in the community who make soups, breads, desserts, etc.
“We also work with the organisation ‘Alone’ offering a ‘meal on a plate’ to those living on their own throughout Donegal who cannot attend the centre.”
Last year, Kathy even managed to extend the delivery service as far as Árainn Mhór.
But the Letterkenny woman doesn’t do it alone, just like the man in the red suit; she has a whole tribe of helpers who generously give up their time on Christmas day to lend a helping hand.
With the event funded
entirely by generous donations, Kathy said its success depends completely on the community.
“This event relies totally on the community and donations and all monies go directly to pay for meals and provisions required on the day,” she said.
“If you would like to be part of this event, please donate.
“Every little bit helps to bring a smile to someone’s face on Christmas day.”
