A LETTERKENNY woman has spoken of her upset after she said her Moroccan-born husband was “goaded into a fight by two men” who “got up in his face and shouted at him” while on his way home from work.
The woman, who did not wish to be named, was speaking out after the frightening incident on Tuesday evening.
“My husband is an Irish citizen and a proud Moroccan. He has lived here almost 12 years. He is a good husband and father, a kind man who works, pays his taxes, enjoys the gym,” she said.
“This evening two men tried to goad him into a fight on his way home. They got up in his face and shouted at him.”
The couple have a 10-year-old son.
“Am I going to also have to worry about him out receiving racism, from what shade exactly is so offensive to you?,” said the woman.
The incident came just a day after county councillors held discussions on Monday regarding a protest planned for Letterkenny on Saturday. The rally has been described by organisers as a ‘peaceful assembly’ at Market Square at 1pm ‘ in opposition to undocumented migrants in rural communities’.
A counter demonstration has also been scheduled for the same location at midday on Saturday, organised by the Donegal branch of United Against Racism Ireland.
The woman said she is “so sick of this hate”, and urged people to look beyond a person’s skin colour.
“Please think before you share the hate on social media. Think of the barbers, doctors, nurses, kitchen porters, chefs, that make up our workforce, our country. The husbands, wives, sons and daughters that are real people – think before you share hatred.
“Take people as you meet them, don’t just decide because of the colour of their skin or if they go to a different place of worship to pray.
“I can’t believe I’m sitting in Letterkenny scared for my husband and son,” said the woman.
