A LETTERKENNY woman who is currently undergoing treatment is hoping to raise vital funds for Cancer Care West by holding a Pink Walk and Run on Sunday, October 15.
Currently undergoing chemo for breast cancer, Lisa Gallagher found herself with a lot of time on her hands when she couldn’t return to her job due to the risk of infection.
With Cancer Care West being a huge support for Lisa throughout her journey, she wanted to give something back to the vital service.
Already raising a whopping €4,800 from hosting a fundraising head shave, Lisa said she wanted to do more.
“This service is vital in our community and until cancer knocks at your door, you are probably unaware that it is there and the service it provides,” she said.
Contacting Monica Grier at the Community Centre in Letterkenny to ask for her help, Lisa said the idea grew legs and has now become a reality.
Not only does Lisa want to use the event as a fundraiser, she is also raising awareness as October is breast cancer awareness month.
Describing herself as being fit and healthy at the time of her diagnosis, Lisa wanted to remind the public that it can happen to anyone.
“If you feel something is not right, get it checked. If I help just one person get checked it would be worth it,” she said.
With the event fast approaching, Lisa is urging everyone who is attending the 5k/3k Walk and Run to dress in pink.
“We want to make it more of a celebration, we want to turn the town pink,” she said.
Registration for the event will begin at 9am at the Community Centre in Letterkenny with the event beginning at 10.30am. The registration fee is €8 per adult and children go free.
On the day, Ciara McVeigh will be on hand to get everyone warmed up.
This event is family friendly and one that is not to be missed.
