GARDAÍ have confirmed they are investigating an incident in which a woman was sexually assaulted in her Letterkenny home last weekend.

The horrific incident occurred some time between 4 am and 5 am last Sunday, October 23, when a man broke into the property while the woman slept.

While Gardaí are remaining tight-lipped, it is understood the culprit entered her bedroom before carrying out the attack. He fled the property, which is near the town centre, a short-time later.

Yesterday, a spokesman for the Garda Press Office confirmed to the Donegal News they are investigating the assault.

“The scene was preserved and technically examined. Our investigation is ongoing,” he said.

It is understood local Gardaí have been combing through hours of CCTV footage from around the centre of Letterkenny as well as routes in and out of the town in a bid to identity the attacker.

Gardaí also set up checkpoints in the area on Saturday night.

Anyone with information in relation to this incident, or who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area at the time, should contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 074 9167100.
