Letterkenny University Hospital faces overwhelming demand in emergency department

Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) is currently experiencing a significant surge in activity, particularly in its Emergency Department (ED), leading to extended wait times for patients.

Over the past week, the ED has seen 1,015 people, placing immense pressure on the hospital’s resources.

Adding to the strain is a notable increase in COVID-19 cases, both in terms of presentations and admissions.

At present, there are 14 COVID-positive patients receiving treatment at LUH.

The hospital’s bed capacity has been stretched to its limits.

As a result, LUH has been forced to postpone some elective procedures. In a statement, the hospital clarified that “urgent, time-sensitive cases are being prioritised,” and patients whose procedures are affected are being contacted directly.

The overwhelming demand for inpatient care has led to significant delays in the ED, with patients waiting for a bed to become available on a ward.

As of this morning, 11 patients are on trolleys, awaiting admission to in-patient beds.

Despite these challenges, LUH emphasised that “all available beds in the hospital are in use,” and every effort is being made to discharge patients who are ready to go home to free up beds for those in need of admission.

The hospital reassured the public of its commitment to treating everyone who presents at the ED, noting that treatment is administered “strictly in order of medical priority.”

“The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause.”

They have advised that, where possible, individuals should seek care from their GP or out-of-hours services before coming to the hospital.

To help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 within the hospital, all visitors are required to practice good hand hygiene, use hand gel regularly, and make use of face masks, which are available throughout the facility.
