COUNCILLORS from Letterkenny Municipal District will tomorrow discuss a motion on traffic congestion issues in the town.
The motion being tabled by Councillor Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly will ask the Council to hold a special workshop with senior management from the Road Management Department and elected representatives, with the hopes of establishing a suitable solution.
Ahead of tomorrow’s meeting Councillor Kelly said, “We need to sit down and try to come up with a realistic plan as to how we are going to address this going forward, because the way it is at the minute is not working.
“In recent months the traffic congestion in Letterkenny has got completely out of hand. Early in the morning, and in the evening, when people are travelling to and from work, traffic coming in from Glenswilly, Ramelton, the Four Lane Road and the Mountain Top is all completely backlogged.”
The Letterkenny councillor explained that local representatives are being inundated with calls from concerned constituents complaining about the congestion. He added that in his role as an elected member and as the Mayor of Letterkenny Milford MD, it is important he expresses the concerns of the general public.
Amongst those voicing their concerns are local businesses owners who are worried that the traffic is impacting their trade, said Cllr Kelly.
“This is something I am very eager to help prevent. Our businesses have suffered enough in the last number of years because of Covid. So it’s only right that we try and knuckle down and help out the businesses around the town. As a council we should be encouraging people to shop local”.
Councillor Kelly said people have told him they are now crossing the border to go shopping because they are burnt out from the traffic in Letterkenny.
“That is not good enough and it is something I am not willing to stand back and allow happen. It is important as a council that we do everything we can to try and help local businesses and to try prevent people from crossing the border- we should be encouraging people to shop local.”
