Letterkenny Tidy Towns unveils bold plan to reclaim coveted title

BY JEROME HUGHES

LETTERKENNY Tidy Towns has launched its most ambitious plan ever, designed to reclaim its 2015 title when winners are announced in October.

The Tidy Towns committee, made up of 18 core members, launched a 3-year Action Plan in An Grianán Theatre on Tuesday after securing funding for the initiative from Donegal County Council.

“We commissioned Flynn Fury Environmental Consultants to draw up the plan. Billy Flynn is a senior Tidy Towns judge so he would have a good idea of what’s needed,” revealed Gerard McCormick from Letterkenny Tidy Towns.

Central to the committee’s strategy is consulting with the community on the best way forward. In this regard, Letterkenny Tidy Towns sent out questionnaires and also recently hosted a well attended public meeting in the Mount Errigal Hotel.

“Using the Tidy Towns competition framework, this new plan has now been created. There’s a lot in it, including much to do this year and in the years to come. The good thing is that it comes from the people of the town,” said Mr McCormick.

“There is no key element. It’s multifaceted. Tidy Towns is a fairly diverse competition. There’s a lot of biodiversity and sustainability work, much of which we’re doing already,’ he added.

When all the winners were announced last October, Letterkenny was only 7 points behind Ballincollig, the winner of the Large Urban Centre category.

Abbeyleix in Co Laois was named Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2023, beating 886 other towns and villages to claim the title.

Judging in the year’s competition begins on June 1 and Letterkenny Tidy Towns would like to thank all the volunteers who share the same goals as the core committee members.
