Letterkenny the place to be for Culture Night

by Evelyn Cullen

THERE are no less than 28 events scheduled in Letterkenny for Culture Night on Friday, with everything from art exhibitions, walking tours and trails, live music, song and dance, outdoor theatre and history talks.

But with all events packed into the short window between 6pm and 11pm, you’ll have to be well organised if you want to hop around to a few different events.

Conveniently, many of the events take place in the main culture and arts venues in the town, which are all within walking distance of one another including An Grianán Theatre, the Regional Cultural Centre (RCC), the County Museum, the Library, Cathedral Quarter and the Town Park, so you can definitely catch a few events if you plan smart.

At An Grianán you can catch a ukulele workshop and an international cabaret show.

The RCC presents an evening of choral music as well several art exhibitions.

The county museum will host ‘Peace Heroines’, a travelling exhibition celebrating the role of women in the building of peace in Northern Ireland, a one woman show called ‘On the Gallivant’ and a storytelling event about ancient battles called ‘Meet a Celtic Warrior’.

The library will take you on a tour of the ‘Donegal Studies Collection’, a collection of every article, book and author associated with Donegal in the last 30 years, and there will also be a Ukranian ensemble of music and poetry called ‘Sunflowers’ at this venue.

Outdoor shows include ‘Critters’ by the Inishowen Carnival Group at the Town Park, and a performance of ‘The Quare Fellow’ by Brendan Behan at the Cathedral Quarter.

While you’re there you can pop up to Líonra Leitir Ceanainn’s office on Castle street for an event called ‘An Chluas Éisteachta’, which promises to be a fun evening of storytelling, music ‘agus craic i nGaeilge’.
