Letterkenny mourns the passing of Michael Cullen

TRIBUTES have been paid to well-known Letterkenny man Michael Cullen following his sad passing yesterday.

Mr Cullen, of 23 Hawthorn Heights, Letterkenny, passed away peacefully at Letterkenny University Hospital.

He spent the last seven months of his life in the excellent care of all the staff at St Eunan’s Nursing Home.

Mr Cullen’s remains will repose at the Eternal Light Chapel of Rest, Mountain Top on Wednesday, August 6 from 4pm to 6pm.

House strictly private please.

Requiem Mass will take place on Thursday, August 7 at 1pm in St Eunan’s Cathedral, Letterkenny, followed by burial in Leck Cemetery.

Meanwhile, St Eunan’s College led tributes to the former secondary school teacher.

“Everyone at St Eunan’s College are saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Cullen,” a social media post read.

“Michael was a teacher at Saint Eunan’s College from 1960 to 1996.

“He taught Latin, Greek, English and Maths during this time and was involved with many of the sports on offer.

“He continued to be a regular visitor at events associated with the college long after his retirement.

“The college would like to express our deepest sympathies to his wife, Monika, daughters, Angela and Nuala, sons, Greg and Dermot, and the wider family circle.

“May Michael Rest in Peace.”

Mr Cullen will also be remembered for his talents as an athlete and he was a long-time member of Letterkenny Athletic Club, coaching a number of athletes to great success over his many years involved in the sport.

He was also a keen golfer and a popular member of Letterkenny Golf Club.

He is predeceased by baby Karen, his parents Hannah (née Coyle) and Michael, his brothers, Patsy and Neil and his sisters, Mary and Anne.

He is much loved by all his family, his wife Monika, his sons, Greg and Dermot, his daughters, Angela and Nuala and his granddaughters, Hanna and Marlene, Greg’s partner, Claudia, and sons-in-law, Harry and Barry.
