A PURPOSE-BUILT maternity operating theatre at Letterkenny General Hospital (LGH) has been lying idle for the last eleven years, it has emerged.
A spokesperson for the Saolta University Health Care Group confirmed to the Donegal News on Friday that the Obstetrics unit was completed in 2004.
The spokesperson said that, currently, caesarean sections are carried out in main theatre in the hospital.
Local Fianna Fail Councillor, Gerry Crawford, who is a retired paramedic, he said it was ironic that the National Nurses and Midwives Conference was held in the St Conal’s campus, adjacent to LGH, on Friday.
In response to a query from Cllr Crawford back in September, the HSE said the theatre has not been in use for “many years.”
Letterkenny is one of the busiest of the five maternity units in the West/North West region, handling 1,872 births in 2012 and 1,768 births in 2013.
