Letterkenny man Seamus Kelly remembered for his quiet nature

LETTERKENNY man Seamus Kelly has been remembered for his quiet nature and sharp wit following his sad passing last week.

Mr Kelly, of Bomany, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at his late residence on Thursday, January 22.

Requiem Mass took place on Monday in St Eunan’s Cathedral, Letterkenny.

One of ten children born to James and Grace, Mr Kelly grew up in a home shaped by hard work, neighbourliness and faith.

After studying at St Eunan’s College in Letterkenny, he began farming on the quiet hills, dedicating his life to caring for livestock.

He first worked alongside his father, and then on his own ably assisted by his brother PJ.

After his father’s passing in 2005, Mr Kelly was a great support to his mother, Grace.

Addressing the congregation at Mass, Chief Celebrant Monsignor Kevin Gillespie said she was blessed to have his loving and supportive company.

“As Grace’s health declined, he kept the house the best he could, as she would wish it,” Monsignor Gillespie said.

“And some of that stayed with him, as good habits.”

Monsignor Gillespie described Mr Kelly as a quiet man with a sharp wit, which was appreciated by his many friends across the farming community.

“The numbers who came to pay their respects to him are testament to his place in their regard and their affection,” Monsignor Gillespie continued.

“That quick wit of his was in part born from a very bright intelligence.

“Seamus not only played Sudoku for instance, but actually devised his own.

“This aptitude must have given him a great edge in card playing, still a great pursuit out in the Glen.”

Monsignor Gillespie concluded his homily by saying that Mr Kelly will be dearly missed by his nieces and nephews.

After Mass, burial took place in Conwal cemetery.

Mr Kelly is predeceased by his parents James (2005) and Grace (2024), sister Grace Marley (2012) and uncle William (2026).

He will be deeply regretted by his siblings Mairead, Breda, PJ, Aidan, Carmel, Claire, Evelyn and Louise.

He is fondly remembered by his aunt Peggy Breen, brothers and sister’s-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family members, neighbours and friends.
