LETTERKENNY’S Declan Harvey has been named ‘News Broadcaster of the Year’ for the second consecutive year at the 2023 IMRO radio awards.
Beginning his career as an actor in London, Declan soon became intrigued by the world of journalism.
Taking the leap and retraining in Broadcast Journalism, he got his first job at LBC before moving to Radio One News Beat.
Wanting to move back to Ireland in 2017, Declan relocated to Belfast where he has since been working at the BBC.
In 2020, Declan became a presenter for BBC Radio Ulster’s Evening Extra show as well as taking over BBC Newsline last year.
Speaking to the Donegal News after his big win, Declan said to get nominated again was thrilling.
“I won last year but it was almost forgotten about completely because the awards were held on the same night as the Creeslough tragedy.
“The minute the awards were done, it was straight back into work.
“What Creeslough showed us was that there are more important things than awards sometimes,” he said.
With Declan being the first to win the award for two consecutive years, he said to win twice on the trot was a lovely validation.
“You work hard day in day out and it’s an incredibly competitive industry. For colleagues in the industry to give you the nod, it helps with imposter syndrome.
“Although I’ll be worried about imposter syndrome again tomorrow, for a week or so you can breathe.
“You can catch your breath for a moment and be proud of what you’ve achieved,” he said.
